The Setting Out Engineer plays a key role in quality control, coordination with subcontractors, and maintaining accurate site records to ensure works are delivered safely, efficiently, and to specification.
Key Responsibilities
Setting Out & Survey Control
- Carry out setting out duties in accordance with construction drawings and specifications
- Ensure accurate positioning of structures, foundations, services, and finishes
- Check and verify line, level, and alignment of works on site
- Maintain survey control and reference points throughout the project
- Review and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and design details
- Identify discrepancies or issues in drawings and report to the Site Manager and design team
- Carry out quality checks to ensure works are built to the correct tolerances
- Maintain accurate records of setting out checks and inspections
- Work closely with Site Managers, Foremen, subcontractors, and design teams
- Provide setting out support to subcontractors and site operatives
- Assist with planning and sequencing of works to avoid errors or rework
- Attend site and coordination meetings as required
- Ensure setting out activities are carried out in compliance with health and safety requirements
- Promote safe working practices on site
- Ensure equipment is used safely and correctly
- Maintain site records, surveys, and as-built information
- Assist with preparation of as-built drawings and handover documentation
- Uisce Éireann as-built documentation
- Report progress, issues, or potential delays to the Site Manager
- Degree or qualification in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or related discipline
- Experience in a Setting Out Engineer role within construction (or strong graduate experience)
- Proficiency in setting out equipment such as total stations, GPS, and levels
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
